Talking to Neil Smedley on masculinity and suicide and stuff. I think suicide is more complex than Neil makes it sound. There are a lot of different reasons why someone might do it, and some of them don't have any reason behind them that you could analyse in the way he does. The trouble is that he assumes a whole integrated personality making a reasoned argument and furthermore he assumes this whole person exists in a social environment where they are surrounded by other similar people, many of whom love that person. Then his argument that suicide is selfish is fairly sound. But I doubt that anyone in that situation would commit suicide, so it is moot.
