Zaid Sabih on WhatsApp "vulnerability"

This is how to do a technical report that makes sense to non-technical people, and doesn't irritate the hell out of anybody that actually knows something about security!

Zaid asks for opinions on whether or not this was deliberately introduced. I think it was almost certainly diliberately left unfixed, and maybe also deliberately introduced in the first place. Apple left the iTunes bug for three years after it was discovered in 2008 because it was being used as a vector to install spyware. See this Daily Telegraph report. Documents uncovered when the country's security service headquarters were ransacked during the Arab Spring uprising suggest that Egypt had purchased a package called FinFisher to spy on dissidents.
